Addressing a series of public meetings in border district of Rajouri, Mohi-ud-Din said that his department had entrusted Panchayats with regulating drinking water distribution in villages hoping the panchs and sarpanchs would perform their duties responsibly and with dedication.
He said the sarpanchs have been empowered to check the availability of field staff of water supply schemes in their areas and ensure their availability at the scheme sites.
Taj impressed upon the sarpanchs to strengthen democracy at the village levels by re-energising panchayats. He asked them to assume powers that government has already conferred upon them.
The department has decided that henceforth water supply schemes in villages duly recommended by panchayats would be considered for execution, he said, adding that every panchayat would be provided with a water testing kit by which they can test the quality of water in their village.
On the performance of his departments, he said, besides taking many steps, systemic functioning of the department was also streamlined. For the first time a proper procedure was adopted by which the cases of casual, seasonal, consolidated workers were decided, he added.
