Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Hunger Games" sequel

The 44-year-old "Capote" star was offered the role of in the sequel to the blockbuster film last month and has now officially accepted the part, reported Contactmusic.

Hoffman joins a cast which includes returning stars Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz and Donald Sutherland.

Actress Jena Malone is also a newcomer to the franchise - which is based on Suzanne Collins' best-selling trilogy - to play Johanna Mason.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will be released on November 22, 2013.
