Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader H S Phoolka today demanded formation of a Special Investigation Team for probing over 200 cases of 1984 riots closed by the Delhi Police.

"AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal had announced the formation of SIT. He had recommended it to the Lt Governor of Delhi for notification but it was never issued," he told reporters here.

"But, now the situation is different as the NDA has come to power at the Centre," he said.

Phoolka urged Akal Takht head Gurbachan Singh to issue directions to the SAD government in Punjab to use its good offices in getting the notification issued.

The AAP leader claimed the Nanawati Commission in his report had said the Delhi Police had closed 241 anti-Sikh riot cases.

"However, on the intervention of the CBI four cases were registered in 2005. These were sent to court for trial and in 2013, five were convicted," he said.

"Still 237 cases are closed. With the formation of SIT, all these cases will be reopened for investigations," he said.
