Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha H S Phoolka today staged protest at the Jodhan police station in Ludhiana district where a woman constable allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

Alleging that no action was taken by the police against the 'Munshi' of the police station despite a complaint by her against him, the AAP MLA from Dhaka demanded compensation to her family and for job to the kin of the deceased.

Claiming that departmental proceedings were initiated and Special Investigate team (SIT) was constituted for investigation following his intervention, he said in a release that medical board was also formed to conduct the medical examination.

Phoolka further said that he will take up the matter in Vidhan Sabha to regulate the duties of woman constables and police personnel especially during night.

"If possible, lady constables should not be given night duties. If inevitable, then, at least two lady constables should be there in police station. Need of the hour is to gender sensitise the police on this social issue," Phoolka said.

A 23-year-old lady constable, who was allegedly harassed by a colleague, committed suicide last night by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in a police station in Ludhiana.
