About 150 members of public, autorickshaw and taxi drivers and memebrs of political parties, barring the AIADMK, today staged a picketing to draw the attention of the government on the pathetic condition of the NH 47 here, police said.

The administration managed to fill the holes at some places, dug by the agitators who decided to plant saplings in the number of potholes on the road during their demonstration, with mud and sand.

People squatted on the road at Hill Bunk and raised slogans against the apathy of the government to maintain or repair the road, they said.

They demanded that the entire stretch of the highway, running to 140 kms, connecting this hilly town to Mysore in Karnataka and Mettupalayam on either side should be relaid.

Meanwhile, the shopkeepers and drivers in nearby Gudalur have decided to observe a bandh on September 30 to highlight the bad condition of the road, they said.

All the shops will be closed and taxies and jeeps will be off the road on that day.
