Police in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh have registered a case after some Congress workers allegedly tied two pigeons to fire-cracker rockets which were launched in the air during a political event.

The incident took place yesterday at Kovvur in West Godavari district during a program to welcome the state Congress chief N Raghuveera Reddy, police said.

The video footage aired by local TV news channels shows some party workers stuffing the two birds in two cones, which were then tied to rockets. Later, the rockets were set alight.

However, police said the birds flew away as the rockets exploded in the air.

Following a complaint, police registered a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

"We are studying the video footage. The culprits who put the two pigeons in cones will be soon arrested," inspector P Prasada Rao of Kovvur police station told PTI over phone.
