A former professor of the Madras Medical College has filed a PIL in the Madras high court praying for a direction to the state government to fill the professor and associate professor vacancies in M.Ch course to avert derecognition of the course.

Medical Council of India (MCI) was likely to inspect the college in the second week of next month and if the vacancies were not filled up, the threat of derecognising the M.Ch in Endocrine surgery lurked, Dr M Chandrasekharan submitted in his petition.

The country had only seven M.Ch. Seats in endocrine surgery, a super speciality course and the the Madras Medical College had two seats. After his retirement as professor and another faculty member's retirement as associate professor, the Director of Medical Education and the Medical Secretary had not taken steps to fill the vacancies, he said.

"Out of only seven doctors being trained every year in this rare super-speciality course all over India, two seats will be lost because of this lapse. Also, five doctors currently being trained at MMC will lose recognition for their study," Dr. Chandrasekaran contended.
