The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today ordered issue of notice to Revenue and Police authorities on a PIL seeking a direction for a CBI probe into the recent seizure of banned Chinese crackers from a godown at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district.

Justice N.Kirubakaran and Justice S.Vaidhyanathan admitted the plea and ordered notice to Revenue and Police authorities seeking a report on the seizure of the crackers.

The petitioner A.Muthukrishnan, executive member of Aditamizhar Peravai, a dalit outfit, also sought a direction to authorities to inspect all godowns in the country and destroy illegal explosive items.

The petitioner alleged that anti-social elements were also importing the explosives items from outside India illegally, and the authorities were not taking any step.

The availability of chinese crackers in Tamil Nadu, which had been strictly restricted by the government, showed that even dangerous explosive substances could be imported with customs officials not doing any checking, he alleged.

He prayed that the case relating to the seizure of crackers from a godown in Sivakasi town this month should be handedover to the CBI, as "import had been done by influential persons from outside India.
