Citing problems faced by people in testing blood for viral diseases such as H1N1 as these were done only in Pune or New Delhi, a PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking setting up of the required laboratory in four major cities of Tamil Nadu.

When the petition came up for hearing, Justices S Tamilvanan and V.S.Ravi ordered notice to the central and state governments seeking their replies within two weeks.

Petitioner C.Anantharaj, an advocate and PIL litigant, said it was necessary to have Bio-Safety Laboratory Level-4 in the state as hundreds of passengers arrive here from Africa and other countries where Ebola and H1N1 are prevalent.

Everyday thousands of samples were being sent for analysis and patients and medical authorities in the state had to wait for more than a week to know the result.

Hence, he pleaded for setting up Bio-Safety Laboratory Level-4 in Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore.
