A pilot project of private security guards assisting police in guarding residential societies will be launched in the city from January 1.

"This is the first such project across the country, which will help in preventing thefts and robbery attempts," Vadodara Police Commissioner E Radhakrishna said while talking to reporters here yesterday.

The move comes after residents of several localities and societies in the city complained about thefts and robbery attempts.

The police, due to lack of adequate strength, were unable to put an end to such crimes which had compelled the residents of several societies to even take it upon themselves to guard their houses.

A local Safe City Foundation Trust then came forward with a proposal of providing private security guards to each patrolling police mobile van for guarding residential societies in Vadodara.

Under the project, two private security guards will accompany a police team in the patrolling police van. The expenditure of private security guards will be borne by the trust, its head Amit Bhatnagar said.

"The police commissionerate has a plan to cover the entire city under it, if the pilot project to be launched under Lakshmipura police station jurisdiction area from January 1, succeeds," Radhakrishna said.

He also said that a new cyber crime office would be opened in Bhadrakacheri area here within a month.
