The Department of Space (DoS) has conducted pilot projects in Assam and Andhra Pradesh using aero-space based inputs for better flood forecasting, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
"ISRO/DoS has conducted pilot projects in Assam and Andhra Pradesh for developing methodology for forecasting flood events using aero-space based inputs," Minister for State in the Prime Minister's Office V Narayanasamy said in reply to a question.
He said the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) is carrying out Flood Early Warning System as an R&D project in 15 projects in Assam in association with Assam Disaster Management Authority.

Narayanasamy said the flood forecasting methodology developed for Godavari basin in Andhra Pradesh by National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) has been transferred to Central Water Commission (CWC).
"Models developed under both these projects are terrain specific and in addition to satellite based inputs, in-situ data on rainfall and river discharge at critical points is also required," the minister said.
He, however, clarified that the CWC and Ministry of Water Resources are mandated for flood forecast and DoS has not formulated any plan for early warning system for flood across the country.
