Plan to revamp village roads and drains in Punjab

Punjab government today announced a plan for reconstruction of village streets and drains within a timeframe by active involvement of panchayats in the state and priority will be given to colonies inhabited by scheduled castes and backward classes.

Initially the project will be undertaken in those villages where estimated cost of construction of streets and drains would be Rs 10 lakh approximately, an official spokesperson said.

The work will be started by giving priority to colonies inhabited by scheduled castes and backward classes and in these villages where streets and drainage system have never been constructed, he said.

In villages, where streets and drains have become old and unusable and have to be re-constructed, the village panchayat would pass a resolution accordingly and approach the Rural Development and Panchayat Officers for requisite work.
 

The villages for construction of streets and drains will be selected by a committee comprising the concerned Deputy Commissioner as Chairman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) and District Development and panchayat Officer, Executive Engineer and concerned Block Development and panchayat officer as members.

He said that the construction work would be completed within three months of receipt of the grant and utilisation certification would be sent on completion of a respective work.
