Speaking to reporters after dedicating the renovated 150-year-old Alappuza lighthouse to the nation and inaugurating a Lighthouse Museum here yesterday, Deora said that the Centre has asked Kerala to provide land for setting up a Maritime University in the state.

The minister said that the Alappuzha lighthouse, which has an automatic identification system to detect the movement of boats within 50 km, will be developed as one of the most important tourist destinations in the country.

The minister also released commemorative stamps on the Alappuzha and the Mahabalipuram lighthouses on the occasion. He said such stamps would help students learn more about landmark buildings and events.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation K C Venugopal, who presided, said another lighthouse at nearby Thottappally would be inaugurated soon.
