Centre is expected to file a set of guidelines to regulate plying of e-rickshaws in the national capital during the hearing tomorrow before the Delhi High Court which had banned the operation of these vehicles for the time being.
Restricting the plying area and regularising them through respective municipal corporations are among the likely regulations to be suggested by the Centre, a highly placed source said today.
"MCD will regularise e-rickshaws by registering them and issue identity cards to their drivers. The area in which each rickshaw will ply will be earmarked and a colour code will be provided for each zone," said a senior BJP leader.
For instance, an e-rickshaw plying in New Delhi zone cannot enter in south Delhi. Another significant point will be that all traffic rules will be liable on these vehicles and their drivers and only four persons will be allowed in these vehicles, he added.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay today met Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and took up the matter with him.
"With the filing of new guidlines in court tomorrow, the current deadlock over e-rickshaws will end. BJP is concerned to save their livelihood," Upadhyay said.
Upadhyay also said that Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are only doing politics on this matter and they are not serious about the drivers of erickshaws.
Delhi High Court has banned the operations of e-rickshaws till a proper policy to regulate them was framed.
"Our concern is very very clear and we cannot allow these erickshaws without any regulations," a bench of justice B D Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul had said.
"We will not allow any illegal acts. You show us under which guidelines or norms the police will regulate them. Have a proper policy then only we can allow it as the rule of law should must prevail," the bench had also said.
