Plantation drive by Kamrup district administration

The Kamrup district administration has undertaken massive plantation drives in various places of the district today on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

In collaboration with leading NGO Round Table Guwahati steps have been taken to plant 300 saplings in and around the premises of Saraighat Lake at Amingaon near Guwahati, a district administration release said.

All circle officers, Block Development Officers, Health institutions, schools and colleges, besides other government establishments also planted trees in appropriate measure in their premises, the release said.

A painting competition was also held in the campus of Hoygrib Madhab Devalaya, Hajo by the administration as an awareness campaign to conserve the rare species of turtles and fish in the Bishnupushkar pond there.
 

As a long term measure for sustainable development of the pond and conservation of the turtles and fish there, a conservation committee has been constituted comprising experts, representatives from local administration, forest and temple committee.

Meanwhile, works are underway to create a better living condition for the turtles in the temple ponds by providing breeding and basking grounds and monitoring and improving the water quality there, it said.

An artificial incubation facility where human assisted eggs hatching could be done has been set up in the pond premises.

The committee under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner Kamrup district has also taken initiatives to develop a biodiversity information centre in the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
