Consumption of plastic in India would increase by 20 per cent in current financial year to reach 178 lakh tonne, an industry official said today.

"Consumption of plastic is increasing in country in different forms. According to our estimates, it would be around 178 lakh tonne in both organised and unorganised sectors in current fiscal," Indian Plastic Pack Forum president Sachin Bansal told PTI.

He said usage of plastic in both sectors stood at around 148 lakh tonne in year 2015-16.

Bansal said that plastic industry would greatly benefit after implantation of Goods and Services Tax as the measure would bring uniformity in prices of various products being manufactured in different states.

He said a mega convention or 'mahakumbh' of plastic industries, "Plastvision India 2017" would be held in Mumbai from January 19-23.

Companies from 45 countries would take part and display their products at the event.
