The Madras High Court today ordered issue of notices to authorities concerned on a plea seeking to appoint a candidate as member from Aruthathiyar-Mochi community in the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission.

Justice K K Sasidharan ordered issue of notices to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and Secretary, Personal and Administrative Reforms, returnable by March 19 on petition seeking the appointment by Valasai E Ravichandran, founder president, Aruthathi Makkal Katchi, a political party.

The petitioner submitted that the Tamil Nadu Government, accepting the report of Justice M S Janarthanam, brought an enactment as "Tamil Nadu Arunthathiyars (Special Reservation of seats in Educational Institutions including in private ones and in appointments or posts in the services under the state within the reservation for Schedule Castes)-Act 2009.

The petitioner submitted that out of 14 members, in the TNPSC, only five members are at present and nine vacancies were not filled for a long time, due to which the performance of it was affected.

For the past 24 years, no member from Arunthathiar-Mochi was appointed as the member of the TNPSC, the petitioner submitted, adding, he had also made a representation to the authorities earlier requesting to fill up one of the vacancies for the community member.
