A PLFI ultra, who was allegedly involved in the killing of a journalist last month, was killed during an encounter with the police in Khunti district today.

Superintendent of Police M Tamilvananan said, "The PLFI ultra was killed during the encounter at Syankel under Murhu police station. He was involved in the killing of journalist Jitendra Singh."

The encounter took place when the ultras of the PLFI, a break-away faction of the Maoists, fired on a police patrol.

They, however, retreated into the nearby forest in the face of intense retaliatory action, he said, adding that a rifle and 24 bullets were recovered from the spot.

Journalist Jitendra Kumar Singh, who was working with a Hindi newspaper in Murhu, was gunned down by PLFI activists on April 27 at Pasrabeda-Khatanga route under Murhu police station.
