Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the demise of former Indian Ambassador to the US Naresh Chandra, saying he was an outstanding public servant who had left an indelible mark on matters of governance and policy.

Chandra passed away last night at a hospital in Goa.

"Shri Naresh Chandra was an outstanding public servant, who left an indelible mark on matters of governance & policy. Pained by his demise," Modi tweeted.

He recalled an "insightful discussion" with Chandra when he, as the ambassador to the US, had invited him for dinner. "He (Chandra) believed in strong India-USA friendship," the prime minister added.

Chandra had served as the Cabinet Secretary from 1990 to 1992 and was the Indian Ambassador to the US from 1996 to 2001.
