Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today greeted people on the eve of Deepawali saying the festival is an occasion for strengthening the bonds of love and brotherhood in the society.

"Deepawali is a celebration of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. It is an occasion for strengthening the bonds of love and brotherhood in our society," the Prime Minister said in his message.

"May this Deepawali usher in hope, joy and prosperity to all," he said.

In an earlier message to his well-wishers, the Prime Minister had urged them to donate money in the PM's National Relief Fund instead of sending gifts to him on the occasion of Deepawali.
