Essel Infra today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of its sewage treatment plant (STP) in Ramana, Varanasi under Namami Gange programme.
Essel Group is the PPP partner for this 50 MLD (million litres a day) STP contract.
"This project is the very first of the two such projects awarded under Namami Gange Programme. The project, which will be constructed in eighteen months and will be operated and maintained for 15 years by Essel Infra," the company said in a statement.

Currently, the entire sewage is being pushed into River Gange without any treatment mechanism and is a major source of pollution in the river, the company said.
Rohit Modi, CEO, Essel Infra, said, "We are proud to be associated with the Namami Gange Programme helmed by Prime Minister. This is an important milestone to achieve the goal of 'Swachh Bharat' and cleaning the Holy River Ganga. We are committed to complete the project before the scheduled timeline".
Essel Infra is leading the consortium for the project and will undertake complete designing, development, finance and construction work of the STP, its Effluent Disposal Pipeline and all associated infrastructure.
