PM pays tribute to Lala Lajpat Rai on 149th birth anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tribute to noted freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai on his 149th birth anniversary, saying he was a unique personality ahead of his time.

"Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai was a unique personality who was ahead of his time. I salute this proud son of India on his birth anniversary," Modi tweeted.

The Punjabi author and freedom fighter was popularly known as 'Punjab Kesari' and 'Sher-E-Punjab' meaning The Lion of Punjab.

He died in 1928 after he sustained serious injuries when police used force during a non-violent protest against the Simon Commission.
