Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in Assam and Meghalaya floods.

Condoling the loss of lives in the floods, Modi sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to those seriously injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

He took the decision before leaving for the US yesterday, an official statement said today.

Eleven NDRF teams, comprising over 550 personnel, have been deployed for relief and rescue operations in flood-hit areas of Assam.

Torrential rains in northeastern parts of the country have resulted in flooding in several districts of Assam and Meghalaya, killing scores of people and leaving several homeless.
