Nine police commandos protecting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were injured when their vehicles were involved in an accident in the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province today.

Sharif was returning to his palatial house at Raiwind after meeting editors of national newspapers at Al-hamra Arts Gallery on the Mall Road when two vehicles in his motorcade were involved in the accident.

Witnesses and police officials said the driver of a vehicle lost control after its tyre burst and it rammed into a tree. Another vehicle in the convoy then hit the other car on Canal Road.

The injured policemen from the Elite Force were taken to Jinnah Hospital, where doctors said they were out of danger.

Lahore Police spokesman Niyab Haider said: "An inquiry has been constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident. The reported bursting of a tyre of a vehicle in the Prime Minister's convoy is a serious thing and it cannot be ignored.
