The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) today said it would hold a meeting on March 20 to finalise the location for the memorial of Army gunner Saurabh Pharate who was killed in Pampore in the line of duty in December 2016.

Pharate's parents, who began a hunger strike outside the PMC building yesterday seeking a memorial for their martyred son at Hadapsar, today called off the protest on assurance of the civic body.

"A meeting of all the stake-holders, including local corporators, has been called on March 20 to finalise the location for the memorial," said Shrinath Bhimale, Leader of House from the BJP.

Saurabh's father Nandkumar Pharate (60) said they have received a letter from PMC about the March 20 meeting.

"We hope that all the local corporators will support the cause in the meeting and the decision on the location for memorial will be finalised," he said.

Three soldiers, including Saurabh (33), were killed in a militant attack on an Army convoy at Pampore on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on December 17, 2016.

His mother Mangal Pharate had told PTI that she and her husband decided to resort to indefinite fast as their pleas for a memorial fell on deaf years.
