: Terming the hike in the price of cement in the last few weeks as "unreasonable and puzzling", PMK founder leader, Dr Ramdoss today urged the Tamil Nadu Government to take steps to control the cement price.
In a Statement here, he said "the price of cement has gone up from Rs 180 per bag in 2011, to Rs 355-365 per bag in June, this year.
"It is natural that when there is a lot of construction works going on and demand for cement, the price may go up. But there is no demand for cement due to economic sluggishness now. It is puzzling that cement price is going up when there is no demand", he said.
"When the TANCEM (a Public sector undertaking) was able to sell cement at Rs.260 per bag and earn a good profit too, the private cement manufacturers should not be allowed to sell it at Rs.360 per bag", he said.
He Pointed out that the cement companies in Telegana reduced the price to Rs.290 per bag after the government warned them against selling cement for Rs 315-325.
Regretting that Tamil Nadu government was not taking steps to control the price of cement, he suggested that TANCEM should increase its production and supply cement to the open market, apart from meeting the government's requirement.
Dr Ramadoss also wanted the government to ensure that price of cement was reduced.
