PMK today opposed Tamil Nadu government's appointing outgoing police chief K Ramanaujam as its Adviser, saying such a move could create unwanted power centres.

Party founder S Ramadoss recalled that former Chief Secretaries Debendranath Sarangi and Sheela Balakrishnan had also been appointed as Advisers by the AIADMK government following their retirement.

"There is nothing wrong in extending an officer's term if his services are indeed required and till the time another officer is ready to take his place and the same yardstick could be applied for appointment as Adviser too," he said.

He said that in a democratically elected government there are Ministers and Secretaries of respective departments to advise and share the Chief Minister's work and therefore appointing an Adviser is unnecessary, he said in a statement.

"Giving extensions and appointing Advisers will create new power centres even as deserving candidates will not get positions," he said, adding the post of Adviser should be abolished and all those officials serving on extension should be relieved and others appointed to their place.
