Public sector lender PNB today said it will roll out e-surveillance system on pilot basis in Punjab to prevent theft at ATMs.

E- Surveillance monitoring system shall keep an eye through advanced technology on undesirable intrusion or any unauthorised activity on ATM, Punjab National Bank (PNB) General Manager Harpal Singh said here.

He further said in case of any eventuality, the system will inform bank officials through SMS or emails alerts for taking appropriate action, he added.

In December last year, over Rs 41 lakh was looted from two ATMs at Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur districts in Punjab.

Miscreants in both incidents with covered faces broke open the ATMs with gas cutters and blocked the view of CCTV cameras by spraying black paint on it prior to their crime.

PNB has 688 ATMs across Punjab with business size of Rs 73,000 crore which is almost one tenth of bank's entire business.
