"His overwhelming love for the motherland and his immense contribution in the field of music and literature will continue to enthuse millions of us for generations to come," Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote in her Facebook post.

To commemorate the birth anniversary of the great poet, playwright and lyricist, the West Bengal government has announced that it would set up an international standard "Dhana Dhanye" cultural complex at Alipore in Kolkata on a three-acre plot.

Stating that Roy, born on this day in Nadia district in 1863, was a source of inspiration, Banerjee said, "We should learn patriotism from his life and work".

Besides authoring a number of plays on social, historical and mythological topics, Roy also penned hundreds of poems and was also a well-known composer of modern songs.

Known mostly for his patriotic compositions like 'Dhana Dhanya Pushpa Bhara', 'Banga Amar Janani Amar', 'Amar Bharat' and 'Patitadwarini Gangey', his songs are known as 'Dwijendrageeti' or the songs of Dwijendra Lal.

His collections of poems and songs have been published as 'Aryagatha' (1894), 'Hasir Gan' (1900), 'Mandra' (1902), 'Alekhya' (1907) and 'Triveni' (1912).

"His famous and lovely song 'Dhano Dhanyo Pushpo Bhora...' during the freedom movement can be easily compared to 'Saare Jahan Se Achchha...'," the CM said.

Roy had died in 1913 at the age of 49 in Kolkata.
