Two men were arrested for allegedly possessing fake Indian currency notes (FICN) with a face value of Rs 5 lakh, police said today.

The recovered fake currency notes are in denomination of 2,000, they added.

The accused claimed that the supply of fake currency notes had completely stopped post demonetisation. It took them more than six months to again start printing counterfeit notes, the police said.

The accused, identified as Parveen (26), was in possession of fake currency notes worth Rs 4 lakh, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).

He was arrested from near Shiv Temple on the Outer Ring Road on June 23, where he had come to deliver a consignment to one of his clients, Yadav said.

During interrogation, Parveen disclosed that he procured these fake currency notes from his associate Sonu Chaudhary (25), a resident of west Champaran in Bihar and circulated it in the busy markets of Delhi, the DCP said.

He was involved in circulating fake Indian currency notes for three years.

Parveen also said that fake currency notes were being pumped in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal from Bangladesh via Nepal, Yadav said.

He has already delivered about four-five consignments of fake Indian currency notes amounting to more than Rs 20 lakh in Delhi, the DCP said.

Subsequently, on June 27, the other accused, Chaudhary was arrested with fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 1 lakh from his residence in Bihar's west Champaran district, Yadav said.

Chaudhary revealed that he procured fake currency notes from one Ashraf, a resident of Malda in West Bengal, the DCP said.

He also said that Ashraf used to receive counterfeit notes from Bangladesh via Nepal, where it was smuggled from Pakistan, the officer said.

Chaudhary has been involved in circulation of fake currency notes for the last five years and received about 15-20 consignments of FICN amounting to more than Rs 50 lakh.
