The police today arrested a 35-year-old woman here for beating up her four-year-old niece with a broom.

The woman was arrested under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, police said.

We have arrested the woman after registering a case and forwarded her to a local court, a police officer said, adding, the woman was sent to jail from the court.

The Phase-II police station at Markat Nagar here, on the basis of a complaint filed by the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC), had booked the woman, a resident of the city, under section 323 of IPC and section 75 of the JJ (CPC) Act.

She was arrested later following police investigations.

Yesterday, the CWC had rescued the minor girl from her aunts house here at Sector 11 of Markat Nagar, after receiving a video clip, which showed that the minor girl's aunt was repeatedly beating her with a broom on the terrace of their house.

The girl had received several injuries.

During an enquiry, it was revealed that the girls parents lived in New Delhi, and she had been staying with her aunt for over nine months now.

The minor girl has told the police and CWC members that her aunt used to beat her up, mercilessly, even for minor faults.
