Police today arrested an elderly couple from Marshaghai area in Kendrapara district today on murder charge while leaving their 6-year-old and 18-month-old grand daughters alone in the house to fend for themselves.

The neighbours took pity and looked after the tiny-tot siblings before the district child welfare committee (CWC) members rescued them, alleged CWC Chairman, Sishir Kumar Routray.

"The police lacked sensitivity in dumping tiny toddlers. While arresting the grandparents, they should have given the little girls under CWC's custody. The CWC has taken serious view of the incident as its an offence under juvenile justice act. The minor girls have been rehabilitated in a short stay home," he said.

We will take up the matter with the Superintendent of Police and the district Collector, who is also the chairman Child Welfare Society. Legal action under Juvenile Justice Act would be initiated against the erring police men, he added.

However, police officials refuted the charge levelled against them. When the accused persons were arrested, their grand daughters were not in their house, said P K Singh, Inspector-in-charge of Marshaghai Police Station.

Gouranga Parida (82) and Hemalata Parida (70) of Teragaon village, were arrested for alleged murder of their daughter-in-law. Their son was earlier arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, the officer said.
