Police beat photo-journalists, IG orders probe

Two photo-journalists working for international news agencies were allegedly beaten by police personnel while covering the polling for Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, prompting police to order a probe into the incident.

Farooq Javid (EPA) and Javid Ahmad Dar (Xinhua) were beaten up by cops in Kulgam district when they were covering protests by some youth during polling.

The scribes claimed that they were targeted by the cops without any reason and the policemen also smashed the windscreen of their car.

The matter was raised during the the customary press conference by Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, A G Mir at the end of the polling here.
 

Mir said probe has been ordered into the incident and action would be taken against those who are found guilty.

"We have ordered an investigation headed by a gazetted officer. I assure you that action will be taken if any one is found guilty," he said.
