Police began probe into death of Dalit girl

Police today began a probe into thecontroversial surrounding into the the alleged suicide of a Dalit girl who was taken into custody last week while she was learning to ride a scooter at Kuttiyadi, about 54 kms from here.

The 19-year-old girl, working as X-ray technician at a private hospital for the last one year, was taken into custody by a police team onDecember 10 along with her friend while they were riding a scooter, according to Kuttiyadi police.

However, they were released after hospital staff were summoned to the station to verify their claim, police said.

The girl allegedly consumed poison soon after reaching the hospital and died in the morning on December 11, police said a case of unnatural death has been registered.
 

Her brother had filed a complaint raising suspicion on the death.

Crime Detachment Deputy Superintendent Jaison Abraham, who is investing the case, visited the hospital yesterday and checked the CCTV footage of the hospital after taking evidence from the girl's colleagues.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Women's Commission Chairperson K C Rosakutty and member P K Noorbina Rasheed visited the hospital at Kuttiyadi today to investigate the matter.
