Police bust gambling racket, arrest 21 people

Twenty-one people, including the kingpin of a gambling racket, have been arrested from Central Delhi's Kucha Chelan locality, police said today.

Over Rs 4.20 lakh in cash, notebooks, registers and other incriminating documents related to gambling were seized from the possession of those arrested which include cashiers, managers, supervisors and gamblers, they said.

The racket, which was operating in Delhi, NCR and various towns of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, was busted on the specific inputs that Mohammad Suleman and his son were running it in Kucha Chelan area of Daryaganj, a senior police official said.

A decoy customer was sent at the gambling den after which sleuths of Crime Branch carried out a raid in which 21 people were caught playing or involved in gambling in house number 2262, Gali Kucha Chelan, the official said.
 

Mohammed Usman Hazi had managed to give police the slip.

"During interrogation, it was found that the racket was being run by Mohammed Usman alias Hazi, a known criminal for last 30 years. His son Mohammed Suleman had joined his father about six-seven months back," Addl CP Crime Branch, Ravindra Singh Yadav said.

The gang members would lure prospective players by offering 80 times profit in case they won a round. The gambling would commence at 11 AM and used to close at around 3.00 AM, he said.
