Police today resorted to cane charge and lobbed teargas shells to disperse agitating students near the higher and technical education department's technical wing office in Aizawl.

The students were protesting the inclusion of four Chakma students in the state quota to study in medical colleges.

Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex Mizo student body said in a statement that the state government refused to cancel the ongoing counselling of those selected for technical studies.

"MZP will organise statewide indefinite bandh from tomorrow until the state government cancels counselling for the Chakma students selected to study medicine," the statement said.

The students congregated today after the four Chakma students entered the venue of the counselling under police escort.
