The Police today resorted to cane charge on villagers who were throwing bricks at a police station to protest against the gunning down of a contractor.

Two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants entered the house of contractor Dara Singh near a hostel in Maheshpur under Maheshpur police station and shot him dead yesterday, police said.

Enraged over the killing, a large number of villagers assembled and put up a blockade on the Pakur-Dumka Road with the body demanding arrest of the culprits, they said.

The villagers gathered again today and blocked the Pakur-Dumka Road near the police station in support of their demand. Soon, they started throwing bricks at the police station, prompting the police to resort to cane charge in which two persons sustained minor injuries.

Deputy Commissioner K K Das and Superintendent of Police P K Srivastav reached the spot to take stock of the situation, which was now under control.
