The spurt in the attacks on cops in the recent past prompted police commissioner Satyapal Singh to pass the order in which he described the assault on police as attack on the "state government".

In a bid to justify the order, Singh said that such incidents could send a wrong message to society that cops who could not protect themselves would not be able to protect the citizens.

There were many instances recently in which policemen were manhandled. During Azad Maidan violence on August 11, two youths were killed and 52, including 44 policemen, were injured, when a rally called to protest alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar turned violent.

Protesters went on a rampage attacking the police, including some women constables, torching media and police vehicles, as well as smashing cameras of photo-journalists and damaging buses.

In an another incident, some motorists assaulted a traffic police constable on the JJ flyover in south Mumbai while traffic constables at Goregaon and Mahalaxmi were also assaulted in the past few weeks, for merely ticking off law-breakers. MORE
