Police constable killed in suspected accidental firing

A constable on election duty in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh was killed today when a bullet from a service weapon of his colleague hit him in what is suspected to be a case of accidental firing, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Dinesh. D (aged around 25) who was attached to Chattisgarh police, they said.

The mishap occurred at Government Women's College in Srikakulam town in the afternoon when Dinesh's colleague Govind Singh was cleaning his service weapon.

"...We are investigating whether it was an intentional act or due to accidental firing," a senior police officer said, adding they were interrogating all those present at the spot.
 

The officer did not elaborate on the kind of weapon involved in the incident.
