Subsequently, a missing complaint was lodged by Mandal's family members at Dongari police station on February 4.
On the same day, Mandal's elder brother Sanarul Mandal (32) received a call on his mobile phone seeking Rs 7 lakh in ransom for Mandal's release, following which Sanarul lodged a kidnapping case.
Meanwhile, police traced the mobile phone tower location of the call in Dongari only.
The kidnappers had said they are aware about money kept at Sanarul's home who is into cloths business in partnership with his three brothers.
Police suspected the voice of the caller might be known to Mandal family and enquired with Mandal's friends and acquaintances.
According to a police official, the abductor had initially asked Sanarul to drop a bag containing the ransom at Reay Road railway station, but changed the location to Wadala Road and then to Kings Circle railway station.
However, Sanarul refused to drop the bag and asked the abductor to release his brother first.
Meanwhile, police zeroed in on a person who was known to Mandal as his voice was similar to the kidnapper's voice.
