Heavy deployment of police has been made in Sandbal village, 30 km from here, to maintain law and order as the killing of Shabir Ahmad (20) sparked off tension, they said.

They said police has registered a murder case in connection with the killing of Ahmad, a Jamaat-e-Islami activist, and efforts are on to nab the culprits.

Jamaat-e-Islami, meanwhile, in a statement strongly condemned the killing of Ahmad and accused a ruling National Conference sarpanch for instigating violence and the subsequent murder of the youth.

"We demand immediate arrest of the sarpanch and his associates and severe punishment to them," a spokesman of the religious body said.
