A tent set up by a group protesting against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar was dismantled by the police today after the group allegedly circulated text messages regarding plans to burn the self-styled godman's effigy.

"The group had been protesting at Jantar Mantar for around 10 days but the tent they had set up there had to be removed today after we received information, through messages they had circulated, about their plans to burn effigy, which we perceived as hazardous and would have posed severe threat to security, especially in view of Republic Day arrangements," a senior police official said.

The protest was demonstrated by members of Naya Daur Party, whose spokesperson Brajesh Bhatt claimed that it was a peaceful demonstration against alleged misconduct by the concerned dera-chief and the police allegedly intervened for no reason.
