Police claimed to have foiled a robbery attempt with the arrest of three persons, one of them facing nearly a dozen criminal cases and another a mobile store manager, amid high drama and firing which injured a metro rail worker here.

The incident took place on Jubilee Hills Road No 36 here yesterday.

The accused - Mirza Mohammad Abdullah Baig alias Faheem Mirza, Abdul Khader, both from Gulbarga district of Karnataka and Mohd Sami, a local resident - were formally put under arrest today, Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy told reporters.

"Acting on a specific tip-off, a Task Force police team kept a vigil and tracked two armed men who were planning to commit robbery yesterday afternoon," Reddy said.

The duo, Faheem and Abdul, came on a bike at Madhapur and was moving towards Ameerpet when the team noticed them and formed five motor-cycle teams to chase them, he said.

"As they halted at a traffic signal, the Task Force Inspector Raja Venkat Reddy dashed his bike to their two- wheeler resulting in the rider (Abdul) falling down. He was immediately overpowered by the Inspector," Reddy said. The pillion rider (Faheem) tried to escape but was caught.

"While trying to escape, a scuffle ensued during which Faheem took out a pistol and fired at the police party. Policemen escaped unhurt, but one of the bullets hit a L&T Metro Rail worker on his shoulder. The labourer has been admitted to a hospital and he is recovering fast," Reddy said.

He said Faheem is involved in 10 cases of robbery and theft, among others, in Hyderabad and also Gulbarga.

Police recovered two country-made pistols and nine live rounds, all procured from Madhya Pradesh, from Faheem and Abdul, the city police chief said.

Sami, arrested subsequently, works as a manager at a mobile store here and on his information the duo had come to Hyderabad on August 17 to commit robbery, Reddy explained.

Their target was a cash collection boy working with a mobile store, the Police Commissioner added.
