Unable to repay her debt, an agricultural labourer from Muthyampet village today allegedly attempted self-immolation in front of the district collectorate office here, but was saved in time by the police.

"M Anjali (40), a widow of Laxmaiah, a farmer who committed suicide over his inability to repay debt last year, poured kerosene on her body this afternoon and tried to set herself ablaze," Karimnagar One Town Circle Inspector (CI) Vijaya Sarathi said.

However, her suicide bid was thwarted in time by the police on duty, the official said.

The victim was reportedly promised Rs 6 lakh as compensation by the state government after her husband's death, but no aid was provided so far, he said.
