A police informer, who passed on information about those hoarding liquor and selling it at exorbitant rates during dry days, was today hacked to death at Kottar in Kanyakumari.
Police said the informer, Kannan, informed them about those who hoarded liquor and sold it during the 'Vallallar Memorial day' last week following which raids were conducted and 414 bottles seized. They also registered cases against four persons including a party functionary.
Police said this morning five persons surrounded Kannan when he was having tea and hacked him to death.

An arrack merchant once, Kanan had turned a new leaf and was helping the police by providing them information about malpractices and irregularities in liquor sales during dry days.
Police said he had an enmity with his neighbour Muthumanikam who was selling liquor privately. His wife had lodged a complaint with the police that Kannan would have been killed by Muthumanikam and his gang members, police said.
A case has been registered a case against seven persons including Muthumanikam and Krishnan, both party functionaries.
