Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths today arrested a police inspector for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to file closure report in a cheating case, an official said.

Babasaheb Bedare, posted as Inspector (Crime) in Bhiwandi-Nizampura Police Station in adjoining Thane district, was investigating a cheating case.

He demanded Rs 8 lakh as bribe from an accused in the case to submit a report in the court stating the case against him was false and hence it should not be pursued further, Superintendent of Police (ACB) Sangramsingh Nishandar told PTI.

The accused agreed to pay the amount in instalments and at the same time lodged a complaint with the ACB. The anti-graft agency laid a trap and caught the 52-year-old inspector while accepting the first instalment of Rs 1 lakh this evening, he said.

Bedare was booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and placed under arrest, Nishandar added.
