Police inspector injured after being shot at by smugglers

A police inspector was injured after being shot at by cattle smugglers at Ramapur railway crossing under Kohdaur police station area here, police said today.

A police team led by Inspector in-charge, Riyaz Ahmed, tried to stop a pick-up truck last night on a tip off that it was carrying animals, but the smugglers opened fire at them, superintendent of police Sunil Saxena said.

Ahmed suffered minor pellet injuries and was taken to hospital for medical examination, the SP said.

Police forces chased the smugglers and arrested one, while six others managed to escape, he said.

Four animals, including a cow, were recovered from the pick-up van, the SP added.
