More than 300 agitating farmers were today subjected to a lathicharge by police during a demonstration here.

The protesters were demanding that their electricity connections be restored after they were disconnected due to alleged non-payment of bills, sources said.

A heavy crowd of farmers led by Kissan Sangharsh Committee today staged a dharna at the Punjab State Power Corporation offices and detained its employees as part of their protest.

However, the protest led to a heavy police force arriving on the spot which then resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the farmers.

More than a dozen farmers were injured in the melee, sources said, adding that some women protesters also pelted stones at the police.
