Police lathicharge crowd demanding man's release

Police today made a lathi-charge to dipserse a crowd which staged a road roko for detaining a motorcycle rider for questioning as he did not stop during a vehicle check near here, police said.

Police said they were checking the vehicles at more than 50 places following reports that some anti-social elements could infiltrate and disturb peace during the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary yesterday.

The motorcycle rider drove rashly when they asked him to stop and they detained him for interrogation last evening, police said.

More than 50 of the man's relatives and friends blocked traffic demanding his release.Police asked them to disperse and as their pleas went unheeded and the situation was getting out of control, they resorted to lathi-charge to disperse them, police said.
 

Police said five persons suffered minor injuries when they ran for cover during the lathi-charge.
