Police today lathicharged and burst tear gas shells to disperse a mob attempting to take out a procession defying curfew with the body of a student leader shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Musalpur area of Baksa district under BTAD last night, a senior police officer said.

Superintendent of Police Mujibur Rahman said some people forcibly tried to take out the procession resulting in the bursting of tear gas shells and lathicharge to quell the irate mob.

Manoj Das, the student leader and an activist of the Sanmilita Janogosthioa Oikya Manch, was shot at by two motorcycle borne gunmen near Musalpur police station last night as he was returning home, the SP said.

Das succumbed to his injuries on way to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital, Rahman said.

To prevent clashes after the incident, the Baksa district administration immediately imposed indefinite curfew in the district falling under trouble-torn Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).

Manoj was involved with the campaigning for former ULFA leader and Independent candidate Naba Kumar Sarania (Hira) supported by the Manch in the Lok Sabha polls this year.

Reports claimed he had received death threats but police said no FIR had been filed on it so far.
